Our Environmental Club has been hard at work on an exciting and innovative project—growing lettuce using a simple hydroponic system! This hands-on experience has given students the opportunity to explore sustainable agriculture while learning about science, problem-solving, and environmental responsibility.
Using a “Lettuce Seed Simple Straw Aeration Hydroponic System,” students discovered how plants can grow without soil. Instead, the lettuce is supported in a nutrient-rich water solution, with straws helping to aerate the system and deliver oxygen directly to the roots. This method not only conserves water but also allows plants to grow efficiently in a controlled environment.
Throughout the project, students took on the role of scientists—observing plant growth, monitoring water levels, and making adjustments to ensure the lettuce thrived. They quickly learned that even small changes in light, water, or nutrients can make a big difference. More importantly, they saw firsthand how innovative solutions can help address real-world challenges like food sustainability and resource conservation.
Beyond the science, this project sparked curiosity and excitement. Students were eager to check on their plants each day, celebrate new growth, and share their progress with others. It was a wonderful reminder that learning can be both meaningful and fun when students are actively engaged.
We are so proud of our Environmental Club members for their dedication and enthusiasm. Their work is a great example of how small projects can lead to big ideas—and hopefully inspire a lifelong commitment to caring for our planet.
