Our students got creative (and a little messy!) this week as they dove into the art of making seed paper — a special, plantable paper made by blending recycled scrap paper, water, and a mix of seeds. What started as a pile of torn paper soon became colorful, textured sheets that can be planted in soil to grow wildflowers or herbs. It’s hands-on learning at its best: engaging, meaningful, and just plain fun!
As students blended, strained, squished, and shaped their paper pulp, they learned how everyday materials can be repurposed into something new and full of life. They were amazed to discover that what might have been considered “trash” could be transformed into something that helps the earth.
This activity is the exciting kickoff to our upcoming Wangari Maathai STREAM project, inspired by the environmental hero and Nobel Peace Prize winner known for her work in reforestation and community empowerment. Throughout the project, students will explore how science, sustainability, reading, art, and engineering all connect. They’ll learn about Maathai’s legacy, investigate ways to care for the environment, and use their creativity to design solutions that make a positive impact.
By starting with seed paper, we’re helping students see that small actions — like recycling and planting — can grow into big change. And this is only the beginning!
Stay tuned for more as our STREAM journey unfolds. We can’t wait to share the inspiring work our students will create as they learn, experiment, and plant seeds for a greener future.
