Vocations Awareness Week: Missionaries of the Word Visit Holy Cross

In the heart of our bustling elementary school, an extraordinary event unfolded recently, leaving an imprint of serenity and spiritual warmth. The corridors echoed not with the sounds of school bells and laughter alone but also with the gentle prayers of devoted religious sisters who graced our community with their presence. The day was not just another ordinary school day; it was an occasion marked by a divine connection and shared moments of prayer.

In the fast-paced world of education, where information flows like a river, it’s essential to carve out moments of quiet reflection and deep connection. Recently, our school had the privilege of experiencing one such transformative journey as Sisters from the Missionaries of the Word, embodying wisdom and devotion, introduced students to the ancient art of Lectio Divina. In the gentle guidance of these spiritual mentors, our classrooms became sanctuaries of contemplation and reflection.

The sisters, through their living example, demonstrated that Lectio Divina was not confined to a lesson plan but was a way of life—a path to unlocking the treasures of wisdom that lie within each student. Their guidance became a beacon of light, illuminating the way for young minds to navigate the complexities of life with grace, compassion, and a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Lectio Divina in the Classroom:

The sisters began by carefully selecting a text that resonated with the students. The classroom transformed into a sacred space, as the sisters led the students through the four stages of Lectio Divina—reading, meditation, prayer, and contemplation.

  1. Lectio (Reading): With an air of reverence, the sisters guided the students through a mindful reading of the chosen text. Each word and phrase became a vessel for contemplation, a stepping stone into the deeper waters of understanding.
  2. Meditatio (Meditation): In this stage, the students, under the gentle encouragement of the sisters, reflected on the words that stirred something within them. The classroom echoed with the rustle of pages and the thoughtful hum of young minds at work.
  3. Oratio (Prayer): As the room embraced a collective stillness, the students were encouraged to respond to the text through prayer. The sisters, with hands folded in prayer, demonstrated that this was not a rigid ritual but a personal conversation with the divine.
  4. Contemplatio (Contemplation): The final stage allowed for a sacred silence to settle. The sisters, with closed eyes, conveyed the depth of this contemplative space, inspiring the students to go beyond intellectual understanding and connect with the spiritual essence of the text.

Spiritual Wisdom Beyond the Pages:

The sisters, through their living example, demonstrated that Lectio Divina was not confined to a lesson plan but was a way of life—a path to unlocking the treasures of wisdom that lie within each student. Their guidance became a beacon of light, illuminating the way for young minds to navigate the complexities of life with grace, compassion, and a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Celebrating Excellence: The B.O.L.T. Awards

At Holy Cross, learning is more than just reading books and taking tests. It’s also about becoming great people with strong, faith-filled values and leadership skills. That’s why we introduced the B.O.L.T. Awards – Builders of Leadership and Tradition. It’s a monthly award where we recognize students for being amazing leaders and for showing the values that make Holy Cross so incredibly special. Each month, we’ll focus on a different value and celebrate students who do a great job living up to it.

Here is a break down of the virtues we will be focusing on this year:

September: Respect and Listening– In September, we started with the value of Respect. This means treating everyone nicely and making sure everyone feels important. It’s also about being a good listener.

October: Compassion and Organization– In October, we’ll talk about Compassion, which means being kind and understanding to others. We’ll also look at the importance of being organized and keeping things tidy.

November: Gratitude and Cooperation– In November, we’ll focus on Gratitude, which means being thankful for the good things in our lives. We’ll also learn about Cooperation, working together nicely to achieve great things.

December: Generosity and Sharing– December is all about Generosity, which is about sharing with others who need help. We’ll also talk about Sharing, which is a simple way to make the world a better place.

January: Perseverance and Problem Solving- When we face tough challenges, we need Perseverance, which means not giving up. We’ll also look at Problem Solving, finding creative solutions to problems.

February: Love and Following Directions– February is the month of love. We’ll learn about showing love and kindness to others. We’ll also talk about Following Directions, which is about doing what we’re asked to do.

March: Forgiveness and Social Skills– March is about Forgiveness, which means being kind and forgiving when someone makes a mistake. We’ll also work on Social Skills, like making friends and being friendly.

April: Integrity and Completing a Task– In April, we’ll talk about Integrity, which means being honest and doing what’s right. We’ll also focus on Completing a Task, finishing our work with care.

May: Service- Finally, in May, we celebrate Service. This is about helping others and making our community better. It’s a great way to finish the school year!

The B.O.L.T. Awards are to recognize students who are not only great learners, but also faithful leaders. We’re super proud of Kayleigh Jadin, Julia VanEgeren, Quinn Servi, Eli DeKeyser, Zita DeLeers, Isley Reimer, Maevh Pflug, Nora Davister, Alison Reinhardt, Natalya Orlikowski, Joey Henderson, Claire Schaetz and Thomas Toppel for showing us what respect and listening look like in September. We can’t wait to see who will shine in October as we celebrate Compassion and Organization. Together, we’re building a school community that values leadership and tradition at Holy Cross.

Holy Cross Catholic School Awards Outstanding Volunteer

Each year, schools in the GRACE System select a very special volunteer from their community to receive the outstanding volunteer award. This award was presented at the back-to-school mass. Holy Cross Catholic School is pleased to recognize Mary Braband for the award this year.

Mrs. Braband is a dedicated servant of the Catholic Faith and inspires the community to become more like Jesus himself as she demonstrates her faith and generosity at every turn. Mrs. Braband volunteers her time and talent as a Middle School Math Tutor and she has also volunteered to sub in our Aftercare Program.

Mrs. Braband is not one to submit to challenges, however. This year, she even hopped on virtually to tutor students while she was quarantining prior to surgery and again while she and her husband were traveling. Mrs. Braband truly loves spending time with students and she successfully builds relationships with them all while teaching them how to understand concepts so that they understand them.

Students and staff are all stronger because of her commitment and we are forever grateful for her generous support. Thank you, Mrs. Braband!

STAR assessment logo

STAR Assessments

STAR Assessments are short tests that provide teachers with personalized learning data for each student. Students may take a STAR test for early literacy, math, or reading. Teachers analyze the data they receive from STAR Assessments to learn what students already know and what they are ready to learn next, to monitor student growth, and to determine which students may need additional help. These tests are research-based and scientifically proven to help teachers guide each student on their unique path to proficiency.

Service Around Green Bay

Our students hosted a donation drive and helped make a meal for a local Green Bay shelter. This is a yearly event that the students always enjoy participating in. From decorating cookies to making soup, they assisted behind-the-scenes in the kitchen. A little food can make a big difference!
