May 16, 2013

Dear Holy Cross Catholic School Member,

The Principal Selection Committee for Holy Cross Catholic School is pleased to announce that Mr. Matthew VanEffen has accepted the invitation to serve as the next Principal of Holy Cross School. His administrative responsibilities begin on July 1, 2013.

Mr. VanEffen comes to Holy Cross Catholic School after serving as Principal at St. Clare School in Wrightstown. He initiated a school accreditation process, created a new school website and improved the school’s discipline through Positive Behavioral Interventions & Support (PBIS). As a Middle School teacher at Sacred Hearts School in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Matt taught 7th & 8th grade social studies. He holds a Master of Arts Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Notre Dame.

Upon accepting the principal position, Matt stated: “I am very excited to be able to join the Holy Cross community and to serve in such a close-knit school family. I look forward to meeting each family through school and parish events. One of my strengths is communication and I hope to learn how best to serve our student’s needs.”

The Selection Committee interviewed three candidates following its review of priorities for Holy Cross School. Fr. Tom Hagendorf, pastor, also met with each candidate and provided his input to the committee. The committee reached consensus on a top candidate before a contract offer was made. The Principal Search Committee thanks the entire Holy Cross community for its prayers and support.

The school is arranging a ‘Meet the New Principal’ luncheon at Holy Cross Catholic School on Tuesday, May 28, 2013. Parents, staff and students will be invited by the school.

Sincerely,

John Peterson
Principal Search Committee Co-Chair

Rev. Dane Radecki, O. Praem.
Principal Search Committee Co-Chair

Robyn (left) and Rene find their new business relationship equally as fun as being sisters

Robyn Moreau Kuhlmann and Rene Moreau Hoffmann grew up at Holy Cross Catholic School and Church as part of Pat and Virginia Moreau’s family of seven. Now, the sisters are business partners and have brought their one-of-a-kind Smart Cow Yogurt Bar to the greater Green Bay community. Not only were they the first to introduce the brand-new concept of self-serve frozen yogurt to the locals, but they have also introduced a unique idea that pairs business with the community to do something good. “It’s Cool to be Smart” at Smart Cow, because the shop regularly donates part of an entire day’s sales to a local school in an effort to help schools with challenging budgets. The program is called “Grassroots Tuesdays.”

Robyn and her husband Hans created Smart Cow Yogurt Bar, opening two stores in Colorado, where they have lived for the past 12 years. Seeing how challenging and exciting the business is, Rene and her husband Dave joined in, and brought the idea to Green Bay. They recently opened their second Smart Cow location at 2450 E Mason Street, in front of East Town Mall. Their first store opened last April at 2321 S. Oneida Street.

The community has gone wild for Smart Cow, enjoying the experience of designing their own cool treat. Customers mix and match 16 flavors of frozen yogurt and sorbet, then choose from dozens of toppings, from nuts and candies to fresh fruit and warmed sauces. Customers are in charge of portions, flavors and cost, as they weigh and pay by the ounce. It’s a healthier alternative to ice cream, as the yogurts are almost all nonfat and contain live, active cultures to aid in digestion. Frozen yogurt typically has about half the calories of ice cream.

Mom Virginia lends a hand (and often an ear) to the success of Smart Cow Yogurt Bar

Fans of Smart Cow are equally appreciative of the regular support of schools, as well as the discount for teachers and military personnel. In just 10 months, the Green Bay stores have given more than $14,000 to area schools through the Grassroots Tuesdays program. The East side store will host Holy Cross Catholic School during the 2013-14 school year, donating part of the entire day’s sales to help support students’ learning inside classrooms where Rene and Robyn once learned. Smart Cow is also part of the Scrip program at Holy Cross, donating 5% of every purchase, in addition to its regular support of schools.

The girls’ mom, Virginia, helps out regularly at both stores, lending great support not only to their mission, but also to the logistics of running a busy retail store. She’s known as ”Grassroots Grandma,” because she hosts and greets every school crowd. She’s also the official baker of Smart Cow pizzelles — crisp, freshly-baked wafer cookies served as a topping, baked to perfection as only she can bake them!

Robyn, Rene and Virginia are appreciative of the great support from the Holy Cross community. Every time you visit, you help them continue on their mission to support local education. Eating froyo is a tasty and easy way to help!

Holy Father,
God of our yesterdays, our today, and our tomorrows.
We praise You for Your unequaled greatness.
Thank You for the year behind us and for the year ahead.
Help us in Your new year, Father, to fret less and laugh more.
To teach our children to laugh by laughing with them.
To teach others to love by loving them.
Knowing, when Love came to the stable in Bethlehem, He came for us.
So that Love could be with us, and we could know You.
That we could share Love with others.
Help us, Father, to hear Your love song in every sunrise,
in the chirping of sparrows in our backyards,
in the stories of our old folks, and the fantasies of our children.
Help us to stop and listen to Your love songs,
so that we may know You better and better.
We rejoice in the world You loved into being.
Thank You for another new year and for new chances every day.
We pray for peace, for light, and for hope, that we might spread them to others.
Forgive us for falling short this past year.
We leave the irreparable past in your hands, and step out into the unknown New Year knowing
You will go with us.
We accept Your gift of a new year and we rejoice in what’s ahead, depending on You to help us
do exactly what You want..
In Jesus name,
Amen.
