In partnership with Invent Now, Holy Cross Catholic School is pleased to offer the nationally-acclaimed Camp Invention program to children entering grades one through six this summer. This exciting, weeklong adventure in creativity immerses children in imaginative play that reinforces and supplements school-year learning in the subjects of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Children will work together to seek innovative solutions to real-world problems and sharpen critical 21st century learning skills such as teamwork and creative problem solving as they rotate through four modules each day that disguise learning as fun.

This exciting week of four fun-filled modules begins on June 18th, when Robin Jensen will direct the Camp Invention CREATE program at Holy Cross Catholic School. In the Problem Solving on Planet ZAK® module, children will crash-land on an alien planet, where they collect important data about its environment to help them design shelters and spacesuits able to survive the planet’s harsh living conditions. Children will explore “green” city design and create an eco-friendly infrastructure by instituting pollution-free water filtration systems, landfills, waste disposal systems, and transportation powered by renewable resources in the Saving Sludge City™ module. In the I Can Invent: Balloon Burst™ module, children will design balloon bursting machines, while learning the importance of gears, motors, springs, and magnets. Finally, in the Action and Adventure Games™ module, a participant favorite, children will combine physical activity and creativity during fun, energetic games. Games are based on children’s ages and ability.

Local educators will facilitate program modules, and enthusiastic high school and college students will serve as Leadership Interns – ensuring that one staff member is in place for every eight children.

Register on or before March 30, 2012 to receive $25 OFF the base price of $215. Every registration includes a free Camp Invention t-shirt. Availability is limited, so visit www.campinvention.org or call 800.968.4332 to reserve your child’s spot today!

They responded to the question: ”What favorite Christmas treat would you want to share with the most important guests?” The following responses were published in the diocesan newspaper:

Holy Cross Catholic School, Bay Settlement
Grade 2, Sr. Carolyn Zahringer

Each Christmas, our friend Deneen makes us frosted sugar cookies. I would take Jesus some heart shaped ones so He can see how much I love Him and I know how much He loves me. — Alex Schwitzer

Every Christmas we have fruit cocktail jello. We also have candies that are chocolate with caramel in the middle. I would take these special Christmas treats to Bethlehem to share with the Holy Family, I think they would like them as much as my family does. —Evan Goral

I would bring chocolate covered pretzels because everybody likes chocolate. I’m sure Mary and Joseph would like them too. — Sophia Schauer

I would bring Christmas cookies and milk because it’s a good treat to share with friends. — Halle Johnson

“Our Family Christmas Pancakes.” Every Christmas my mom makes us Rudolph, Snowman, and Santa shaped pancakes for breakfast. My mom uses chocolate chips for button eyes, whipped cream for Santa’s beard and last but not least a red grape for Rudolph’s nose. I LOVE pancakes! I think Jesus’ family would enjoy them too! I LOVE Stefl Christmas! — Olivia Stefl

My family has this pink jello at Christmas. My Aunt Laurie and my mom make it. It is so good! It is a family tradition. I’d share this tradition food with the Holy Family. I’m sure they’d like it! — Maryssa Jaeckels

I would bring ice cream to Jesus in Bethlehem. Ice cream is our favorite treat. — Joshua Vissers

Our family makes a cake for Jesus every year. And, we sing happy birthday to him. It would be great to go to Bethlehem and share Birthday cake! — Abbigail Anderson

My Aunt Jackie makes apple pie for every Christmas. I think the Holy Family would like it! — John Sack

My family always has cherry pie for Christmas. My grandma always makes it. Grandma had nine kids, so she makes lots of pies to feed us all. She makes great buns for dinner too. I am sure that everyone in Bethlehem would love it too. — Carlene Goral

My sister, Jordyn, and my grandma love to make pecan pie. I love to make chocolate pecan pie. I think both kinds are a special Christmas treat. I think that Jesus’ family would like our pie treats. — Jenna Zehms

We have a gingerbread house. And every day we have a piece. Jesus would like it. —Jacob Limoni

For Christmas, I like a apple pie as a special treat. I am sure Jesus would enjoy a sample too. Mary and Joseph would like a slice too. — Soo-Yin Brown

Frosted Cookies. Recipe. First you make the dough. Then put it in the oven. The time is like 10 to 12 minutes. Then when it is done you put frosting on. They are delicious. I think Jesus and his family would like them very much. — Erik Sack

—Holy Cross Catholic School teacher earns Innovative Educator Award —

(Town of Scott, WI) Thanks in part to a grant from the Wisconsin Public Service Foundation, some of Wisconsin’s prized nature preserves will become a giant classroom for middle school students at Holy Cross Catholic School in Green Bay.

Middle school science teacher Jason Johnson received a grant for the purchase of Garmin Global Positioning System (GPS) Units and memory cards.

Mr. Johnson, an avid outdoorsman in his free time, said that students will use the GPS units to mark observation points within a wildlife refuge or state park during the fall, winter, and spring. They will document the seasonal changes that take place with respect to plants, trees, and wildlife, and will also use the GPS unit to create a topographical map of the environment in which they are recording their observations.

Mr. Johnson said that there are many obvious academic benefits of the project. Students will incorporate math, science and technology.

“And it’s just really cool to get out of the classroom for some hands on learning,” commented Mr. Johnson. “Students have the opportunity to learn the application of academic skills to the real world.”

Just as important, Holy Cross students learn what it means to be good stewards of God’s creation.

“This project is designed to get students connected with nature,” commented Mr. Johnson. “We want to make our students aware of the organisms around them and the changes they go through. Our goal is that they will develop an awareness and concern for the impact that we, as humans, have on the ecosystem around us and the world God created.”

This is the second time Mr. Johnson has earned the Innovative Educator Award.

“Jason is always looking for creative ways to engage our students within the curriculum,” commented Principal Robin Jo Jensen. “I am very pleased that the Wisconsin Public Service Foundation has given him this recognition and the means to make his vision happen”

This project will incorporate all of the middle school students at Holy Cross Catholic School. This year 62 6th-8th graders will participate. Each year all middle school students will be able to participate in correlating information against previously collected data as well as expanding the study into new locations. The project will impact every student who walks through the doors of Holy Cross Catholic School.

The WPS Foundation’s Innovative Educator Program
Since the program’s inception five years ago, 53 projects have received more than $48,000 in Foundation grants. The Wisconsin Public Service Foundation, incorporated in 1964, is a private, charitable foundation that supports charities and organizations that need financial assistance. Wisconsin Public Service Foundation is funded by shareowners of the corporation, not by its electric and gas customers. The Foundation provides nearly $1.0 million annually in contributions to programs that support activities in the areas of arts and culture, community and neighborhood development, education, human services and health and care for the environment.

About Holy Cross Catholic School
Located on the growing northeast side of Green Bay at the historic crossroads of Church and Bay Settlement Roads, Holy Cross Catholic School is the point at which faith, community and education converge. Holy Cross Catholic School has been in existence since 1868 and has an enrollment of nearly 200 students in grades 4K to 8th grade.
About GRACE
The Green Bay Area Catholic Education (GRACE) System is the largest Catholic school system in Wisconsin. A collaborative school ministry of the 23 Green Bay area Catholic parishes, GRACE was formed in 2008 to provide affordable, high quality Catholic early childhood, elementary and middle-school education.

– Generosity of Santa Claus becomes a teachable moment for Catholic school students –

Town of Scott. December 20, 2011 — The students at Holy Cross Catholic School, 3002 Bay Settlement Road in Green Bay received a big surprise from Santa Claus on Wednesday, December 21, 2011.

Every year Santa takes a moment out of the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations to make an appearance at the school just prior to Christmas, thanks to the planning of the school’s home school organization, FAST (Families and School Together). Mr. Claus talks to the students and sometimes hands out a little treat. This year, however, Santa is bringing along a couple of his reindeer and an elf or two for assistance with the animals.

The North Pole’s public relations department said that the reindeer are raised by a local branch of Santa’s North Pole operation, often referred to as “Santa’s Crew.”

Santa was happy to show off members of his herd, but he did not fly in for the event as the reindeer need to rest and conserve their energy for the big trip this weekend.

“I am very excited to see the look on our students’ faces when Santa shows up with his reindeer,” commented Principal Robin Jo Jensen. “This was a fun event for our children and another teachable moment for our faculty and staff. The selfless, gift-giving nature of Santa Claus is another powerful way for us as a Catholic school to teach our students about God’s unfettered generosity and love. God gave us the ultimate gift by sending Jesus into our broken world. This is what we celebrate at Christmas. This is why we give gifts and gather as family and friends–to appreciate and note the birth of our Savior in our hearts, minds and souls.”
Whether it is to the loved,
the lost, or the broken,
we give thanks for the joy and wisdom
that they have brought to our lives.
Giving thanks is simple and easy,
but it is not always shown.
Just showing a little bit of thanks makes all the difference
and mends the broken,
and makes the loved feel appreciated.
